Hello there, fellow bookish folks! Sorry I’ve been absent during the last moment of January but my exams were calling me. And so, will this February but by now I’ve at least managed to schedule this big post for you all.
And as usual, it’s the new monthly post with all the interesting book releases I managed to spot! Don’t forget to let me know if you find anything interesting and to contribute by the list if you think a book is missing.
A book with several queer characters, including trans and non-binary, but also one of the MC and an asexual biromantic! All confirmed by the author! I’m definitely waiting for this one, with French details, two girls swapping lives, and everything seems fine until a war starts in their country. And they must save the situation
ALL THE STARS AND TEETH| All The Stars and Teeth #1
Renegade princesses that will probably swoon with a pirate. Pirate aside, which I can’t care, there will be mermaids, soul magic, a princess that failed her test for the monarchy and it’s forced to flee. But still, the last line of the blurb heavily implies this princess will still do everything she can for her people. I’m on board.
THE KING OF CROWS | The Diviners #4
Things I know: nothing aside that is the last book of the series. Nothing else. Yeah, I never read this series and I know basically nothing about but that it’s very loved. So… in case you didn’t know, the last book is coming out!
YES NO MAYBE SO
A co-authored book which blurb say mostly nothing aside: we have this boy, we have this girl, they have different culture, they knock on doors for political reasons. And it’s a romance. That’s it. But since Albertalli took part in it, and I trust her, and I trust Saeed too.
THE GRAVITY OF US
So, there’s space mention but this is not a sci-fi and remain a contemporary, where two astronauts’ kids meet each other, are drawn to each other with the setting of human first mission to Mars. Then chaos happens because something is shady in the mission and mediatic circus swarm all over the situation. Not 100% into this but still pretty interesting
EMBER QUEEN | The Ash Princesses Trilogy #3
Another book in the series ” I know nothing”, since I never had the chance to read the first book. But yes, the trilogy is now reaching its end.
THE QUEEN’S ASSASSIN| Queen’s Secret #1
Okay, this sound very trope-is, which isn’t a bad thing because we need them sometimes. But what we have: a reign with magic forbidden, a lost scroll that contain all the magic knowledge (but why this is irresponsible and illogical), an assassin working for the queen and with a mission, a girl with secret magic that wish to join the Guild. Then shit happens and the two of them are drawn together to protect the kingdom and there will be lies and twists.
DEATHLESS DIVIDE | Dread Nation #2
Nothing to add here that is particularly relevant, since I never read the first book, but this is the sequel of an alternate historical story, which include zombies and American history.
I don’t know. Really, the blurb is so vague and absolutely unclear, that I had to search up for reviews to understand better. So, it’s all about a girl who get contacted by her older self, which instruct her to kill a dude in her same school because once they grow up, they will release a deadly virus that will kill tons of people. Still, not sure what this is actually about
WHAT I WANT YOU TO SEE
A contemporary story about the world of art, where the MC get her first slap of reality once joined an art school. Soon teared down by others, she meets a boy who help her raising up her spirit. Until she decides to work her own version of his works (which… bad, girl). And the she gets involved in a crime. Honestly, I don’t know what to expect from this but I’m curious.
WHAT KIND OF GIRL
This one is heavy and people who already read it made it very clear in many reviews. The blurb was already setting me on war, but I soon noticed how it was focused on the book’ thematic that moves around victim blaming. In fact, the story looks to revolve around a girl denouncing his boyfriend at the school principal, only for the chaos to ensue. Honestly, it looks very good.
THE SISTERS GRIMM
About this one… there’re two blurbs. One very clear, and one less clear but with very juicy info. I’ll go for the latter, since it’s the one associated with the cover here on the blog. So, the story is about four girls born the same day but with different mothers, they found each other only to be separated. Their destiny is to meet again and so meet their father, to unlock their true potential and fight what could destroy their beloved ones.
NIGHT SPINNER| Night Spinner #1
This looks very interesting. The story is about a once proud warrior with the ability to spin darkness at her command. All until she lost control of her powers and is banished. She’s one occasion to reedem herself to eye of her empire: capture a rebel that has been assaulting caravan after caravan. And all seems very clear until she discovers why the rebel is doing so, and her morals get torn between her sister, her empire, the rebel and the advancing enemy.
CLOACK OF NIGHT | Circle of Shadows #2
Third advise with no real blurb to comment because I never read the first book or know much about the series, just here to let you know that the second book is out.
SENSATIONAL | Spectacle #2
Historical novel that mix with fantasy and thriller. Sequel and last book of the series, like the first novel, the MC must find a new killer that is terrorizing Paris. And that’s pretty much it but this one involves also beheaded people.
INK IN THE BLOOD | Ink in the Blood #1
Honestly, probably one of the new creative themes I’ve ever seen in young adult since a lot of time. It involves tattoo magic, two girls rebelling to the use of it done by the religious institution of their world, putting up performances instead of propaganda… until they realize the god of their world is real and out for vengeance. I’m sold.
HONOR LOST | The Honors #3
Again, another to the list of “no comment”. I never read the sci-fi trilogy but I’ll do as soon as I can. Anyway, third book is out!
Apparently a standalone fantasy, that feature a girl, once an orphan, being raised in the empire court side by side with the heir. When it’s time for the heir to reach the throne, the MC realize how much she doesn’t really have a role in the court, aside from the fact that she’s nothing more than a pawn in the current king’s plan. And things start to change when a mysterious healer reach the city.
THE UNSPOKEN NAME | The Serpent Gate #1
So, we have a protagonist that must climb a mountain and commit sacrifice. But before their death happens, a powerful mage spins her life into making her a spy, a thief and an assassin, turning her back to her gods and help him reclaim his rightful throne.
HEART OF FLAMES | Crown of Feathers #2
Let me “coff coff” embarassingly because this is another of the unread sequel. If that wasn’t clear, I don’t comment on sequels of series I never read because of 1) spoilers 2)I won’t really contribute much to the discussion.
So… second book is out!
THE SHADOW BETWEEN US
Juicy fantasy about a girl intentioned to marry the Shadow King, the one with the power to bend darkness, and made herself a queen. All while trying to preserve his life, so she can kill him herself, and while… you know don’t fall in love with him? The blurb also says that the MC is not a good person, so it’s a villain x villain story, something I can enjoy to read (instead of seeing a MC being abused and tricked by the villain “”love interest”” and call it a romance)
THE SOUNDS OF STARS
This is very interesting, because it’s about humanity being invaded by an alien species, that deeming humans as too volatile, strips them of every form of art. But the girl MC keeps an illegal library, until it’s found by an alien. Yet this one is a bit different from the others, because human music attracts him, and this the bond that allow them to embark together in an adventure to help the world.
Things I know are: it’s a Red Riding Hood retelling, people says it’s feminist but someone I trust really didn’t say anything flatter-ish about this one, I honestly don’t get what the blurb is trying to tell me. The girl gets attacked by a wolf in the forest. And she may tranform into a wolf herself.
MASTER OF SORROW| The Silent Gods #1
Since a white man wrote, and my faith in white men that write fantasy is literally buried underground, I’m not sure where this will go. The author also gave a very interesting response about romance in book, how for some character is just part of their initial arc. Anyway, the blurb it’s fairly interesting since it’s based onto the idea of an orphaned low key chosen one, raised by an old wise man… but actually the boy was raised by his parents’ killers and he’s actually the reincarnation of an evil god, and he will have to choose between accept what could become or follow the doctrine he learnt
WE UNLEAS THE MERCILESS STORM | We Set The Dark on Fire #2
Last book of the sequel unread😂 I’ve heard only great things of the first book and so, if you didn’t know the series, this is a great chance to check it out
